A platform offering numerous advantages
 

 
In use ever since January 2004, the University of Poitiers “waters” platform is a research site for the actions of the sub-program known as “Innov’Eaux”, which is part and parcel of the “Waters” program of the University and the ESIP institute. Availing itself not only of this tool but also of the Deffend site for hydro-geological studies in the “Res’Eaux” (water network) sub-program, Poitiers henceforth benefits from a “favorable international image”; so says the man at its helm, Bernard Legube, an ESIP professor.

“An opportunity dating from the 12th French nation-region planning contract” along with a genuine “scientific will” led to the genesis of the waters platform. The idea for this 800m_ building goes back to the end of the 1990s at the precise time when the 12th contract was taking on permanent shape. “Our official supervisors and the territorial authorities had asked us, as researchers, to think about “diagonal” projects with common themes”, comments Pr. Bernard Legube, director of the laboratory of chemistry of water and the environment (the French LCEE). “We stood in need of square meters, of a showplace for industrial actors, of a tool…”

As he mentally scanned the University of Poitiers, the researcher perceived “significantly high potential” pertaining to the “Water” theme in the fields of chemistry, the life sciences, sciences for the engineer (SPI), the economic sciences and law… Water is everywhere and may be said to permeate close to ten laboratories. And even though the building (the first of its type in France) only opened in January 2004, researchers had started collaborating well in advance.

“To enhance existing concepts”

And so, two sub-programs got underway in 2000; they essentially revolved around the laboratories of chemistry of water and the environment (LCCE), of catalysis in organic chemistry (LACCO), of automatic control engineering and industrial informatics (LAII), and of studies in aerodynamics (LEA). “Innov’Eaux” has as its aim to work on the problematic of “Subterranean waters meant for consumption” and “industrial aqueous effluents”. “Our approach is double; to enhance existing concepts and to phase them into industrial applications, all the while coming up with novel techniques”, indicates Bernard Legube. One example: Pollution control by catalytic oxidation or via an electron accelerator – or perhaps solar photocatalysis.

It is at this point that the “waters” platform, with its 800m_ of technical installations and its laboratories’ capacity for heavy materials, allows for productive work in common. The second program, which is known as “Rés’eaux” (water networks), is mainly brought to bear upon “Resources in fractured environments”; it places fewer demands on the platform. The person in charge of the program, Gille Porel (maître de conferences or Associate Professor at the Science Faculty), is presently working on an experimental site belonging to the Deffend. In any event, the present-day emergence of the “water” theme in the university landscape is a reality not to be denied.
