EVENTS 2005, November 3   Poitiers, the biotechnology capital   Jean-Michel Maixent, linchpin of CMB 2005 in Poitiers   The CMB congress, the visit of a delegation from the Walloon Agrobiopole… For one memorable week, Poitiers was transformed into an honest-to-goodness biotechnology capital. Let’s look back on some recent highlights in the existence of the Biopole. The Palais des congrès was filled to the rafters for several days on the occasion of a colloquium on molecular and cellular biology. Just a few years ago, you would have had to pinch yourself to believe you were seeing hundreds of researchers, thousands of high school students and 11 Nobel prize winners sharing a common experience under the same roof. And yet, from October 7th through October 12th, all of these people indeed came together for the 4th worldwide congress of the CMB publication. On this score, we can take our hats off in homage to Jean-Michel Maxient, vice president of the physiological engineering Master’s at Poitiers University and chief organizer of this major event. Along with his stalwart team of ProGPhy students, he magisterially succeeded in transforming a trial run into a cumulative masterstroke. “This happening allowed us to present the latest advances and discoveries achieved by researchers from throughout the world”, exults Maixent. Walloons in Poitiers And then, there was another event just as important for the Poitiers Biopole: the visit of a delegation of Walloon researchers from the Namur Agrobiopole; ten of them took the trip to Poitiers in mid-October. Ushered into the area by Pascal Ledroit, their official representative, they attended an October 11th breakfast at the Deffend botanical gardens of Poitiers University devoted to the themes of “Water” and “Plant Science”. “It was a matter of extending a web of exchanges whose spinning got underway last year”, recognizes Pascal Ledroit, who is steadfastly determined “to create ambitious research programs on a European scale” along with equally “ambitious” partners. “The Poitiers Biopole is right at the top of our list”, indicates the chargé de mission. Consequently, joint efforts on such themes as “the vegetative multiplication of plants and “biofuels” could soon come into being and constitute pursuits bringing together active participants from the two Biopoles.
