B Braun burnishes its image

French leader in the manufacture of medical materiel, B Braun Medical has five sites in France, including the certifiably “excellent” one located in Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, whose employees number 140.

The information scarcely made a ripple, yet it merits a moment’s pause. Quite recently, B Braun Medical Chasseneuil was awarded the 2006 Janus health prize; the mark of distinction (the French “label”) was meant to honor the Celsite implantable chamber, which is manufactured close by, in Greater Poitiers. “In fact, this seal of approval rewards the design of a product that both facilitates practitioners’ work and provides patients with comfort”, stresses Brigitte Bardon, administrative and financial manager of the Chasseneuil site. Janus 2006 constitutes timely recognition of the efforts in R&D furnished by the leading French manufacturer of medical materiel.

As a center of excellence, the Poitiers site researches, develops and manufactures its own products, which include vena cava filters (22,000 a year), implantable chambers (120,000) and stents. The implantable materiel of pronouncedly high added value winds up “landing” in French, other European and worldwide health centers. “B Braun exports throughout the world, particularly in the United States, Canada and Asia”, adds Brigitte Berton.

New buildings

Wishing to remain ahead of the game from a technological standpoint, earlier this year the Chasseneuil site equipped itself with a new work-related tool; the administrative offices and the production site (4000 m2 as opposed to 3000 m2) were all but metamorphosed. “The site dated from 1987. We had to improve the production tool”. In the process, B Braun invited the site’s economic and institutional actors to come and discover the new unit. "We likewise opened company doors to the employees’ families and friends”, indicates Brigitte Berton. Success guaranteed.

If B Braun has agreed to major investments, the reason is that within the group, Chasseneuil represents an essential pole for R&D. As product prices steadily decrease, the French leader has been automating its production lines. “Even though we have new markets, we aren’t necessarily recruiting as a result.” On the other hand, hiring is more prevalent in the methods and R&D departments, that is to say at the very locus of the added value brought into being by B Braun.
