Futuramat steps up the pace

Following a long maturation period, the Futuramat project has just entered into its industrial phase, which shall consist in the production of materials of vegetal origin addressed to plastics processors. Here are the explanations provided by Sandra Martin, the director.

An idea in 2004, a company created in 2005, a launching of the industrial phase in 2006… When she peers into her rearview mirror, Sandra Martin judges that Futuramat has not taken “that much time” to come into being. “I had to find the means to develop the company…”, indicates the one-time associate director of the Valagro platform. She found these means by participating in a nationwide contest awarding the winners with assistance in the creation of innovatory technologies. Having been given a prize in the category known as “emergence” and “creation”, the engineer procured herself means in line with her ambitions. Research and development were the initial watchwords.

But what about the biodegradable bag, which was presented in its time as the hall product of Futuramat? “It is not my primary market. Competitive positions have already been taken, particularly as regards large-scale distribution”, admits Sandra Martin. One cannot be clearer! She is a director who rather tends to target plastics processing professionals, “who perform injection”, as well as calandering professionals, “who manufacture sheets” .

Moreover, “made in Poitou” products were recently to be seen at the stands of the luxury goods packaging exhibition in Monaco. “We in fact obtained some highly interesting feedback”. Cases and holders, plastic cartons, document carriers… These products are highly marketable, especially insofar as they are at once of fine design and 100% biodegradable. And Sandra Martin does not believe that such materials of vegetal origin are merely or transitorily fashionable. “I think that at present, a fundamental shifting of the ground is taking place. This may be explained by citing several phenomena: the heightened price of polymeric materials, the growing environmental awareness of European populations and the innovatory character of the products developed ”.

Here are three conjoined phenomena that “make managers think”. So much said, Sandra Martin still vitally needs to explain the multifarious interest of “her” vegetal raw materials. “Everyone has got to appropriate the right arguments ”, so she insists. Considering herself “highly upstream with regard to the end user”, she is also thinking in terms of developing some signally clean products. In fact, she wishes to “provide proof by example”. As concerns 2007, Futuramat is aiming to manufacture and find outlets for 500 tons of products. “In the long run, our objective is 2000 tons, which is the minimum quantity carrying true market weight”.
