Christian Huyghe aims for “excellence”

As the new president of the Poitou-Charentes Inra (agronomical research institute), Christian Huyghe is particularly attentive to ecologically responsible approaches and reinforced partnership with local governmental authorities and the agricultural professions.

The recent arrival of Christian Huyghe at the head of the Poitou-Charentes Inra marks the emergence, as he states, of an “ambitious policy”. In accordance with the mission statement put forward by the CEO, Marion Guillou, and as the new research director of the plant genetics and improvement department, Huyghe intends to spearhead a « quest for excellence » by developing structure-imparting programs : the prairie, forage systems, cattle and goat breeding ; creation of a porcine animal experimentation pole ; reinforcement of programs on the coupling of agricultural pursuits and environmental impact ; development of activities in apiculture and alternative aviculture systems.

The 48-year-old one-time agronomical engineer is also aiming for excellence of an environmental order. In accordance with both the French Grenelle session on the environment and with nationwide Inra policies, the president intends to « reduce the center’s greenhouse effect gas emissions by 3% as of 2008 » and is targeting « energy self-sufficiency for the experimental units in 2012 ».

Regional colloquia in 2009

Huyghe’s desiderata go still farther; he also wishes to bring the Inra into closer relations with its immediate environment. This shall entail « reinforcement of the role of the institute’s scientific expert » with regard to governmental authorities. Huyghe deems that « thanks to the wealth of its research, the Inra indeed helps to enlighten governmental decisions in the fields of agriculture, nourishment and the environment ».

Another announcement: the upcoming creation of two groups of scientific interest on the themes: « Prairie, breeding and territory »; « Seed and varietal innovation in forage species and on grass ». Finally, Huyghe will be striving for the emergence, in 2009, of regional colloquia designed to “favor the transfer of research-based knowledge towards agricultural development and teaching”.
