Parexel: The Cap provides its support

Through the words of its vice president in charge of economic development and employment, Catherine Coutelle, Greater Poitiers (the CAP) is throwing its weight behind the clinical research center Parexel, the conformity of some of whose studies has not been attested by the Afssaps.

“The local press recently evoked the momentary difficulties encountered by the clinical research center Parexel, which is to be found in the Gibauderie zone of Poitiers. Strongly involved in the bringing into being of the Biopole of Greater Poitiers, it is with the closest attention that I have been following the evolution of all those belonging to the pole.
The Poitiers-based laboratory Parexel, a subsidiary of the American group Parexel International, has been deemed by the French agency of sanitary safety for health products (Afssaps) not to have been functioning, at the time of an inspection that took place in 2006, in conformity with the relevant international requirements. The laboratory conducts analyses on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry. The procedural imperfections that were noticed have to do with assay techniques in the animal. Safety trials must quite obviously be conducted in accordance with the rules of good practice and in full respect of rigorous methods of analysis. That is why the Afssaps performs regular inspections. I have spoken with Mr. Bertoye, who heads the clinical trials and safety inspection department at the Afssaps. Parexel has already organized a number of corrective actions and is presently pursuing its action plan. Fully aware of the difficulties entailed by its decision in terms of market loss and impact on studies conducted in the interest of public health, Afssaps is closely following the company at this difficult moment. A new expert appraisal is underway, and quite soon, its conclusions will have been drawn.
In the Biopole framework, the CAP has unfailingly supported Paraxel’s research activities and accompanied the Poitiers-based laboratory as it aspires to become the group’s European center of bioanalysis.
In these times of difficulty for Parexel, in the name of the CAP I wish to address a message of support to the 45 employees on a site of which the scientific competence, the level of qualification and the quality of whose investigations constitute a decisive “plus” in worldwide competition; I likewise express my support to the group’s local management; we have always maintained excellent relations, and we shall be meeting again over the coming days. I haven’t the slightest doubt that they will do all they can in order to recover the accreditation necessary to pursuit of their activity, and that they will be drawing upon the skills and reliability of their personnel.”
