DNA SCHOOL 2007, November 28

GMOs under debate in Poitiers

In partnership with “Terre (earth) des sciences”, the Angers-based CCSTI and the Poitou-Charentes INRA, the Poitou-Charentes DNA school along with the pole of Espace Mendès-France devoted to the history of sciences and techniques is organizing two days of study (Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th of December) revolving around the theme of genetically modified organisms (GMO). The program? The days will involve practical workshops (how, for example, to manufacture a GMO), lectures, first-hand reports and round tables. Scientists, teachers, militants from associations .. and simple citizens, as well, will be asked to offer commentary on 30 years of genetic engineering.

“If we are to go by the sheer number of reports and articles, genetically modified organisms had never before been such a hot topic of conversation”, admits Laurent Fillion, director of the Poitou-Charentes DNA school. These meetings will provide an excellent occasion to see where we now stand as regards GMOs. It bears mentioning that the gathering will be chaired by Cécile Klinger, who is in charge of the biology pages of the French magazine La Recherche.
